Energy production from biomass has been growing over the years all over the world. In Brazil, the sugarcane sector has been investing more and more to make production competitive and supply the Brazilian energy matrix in the coming years, thus giving a boost to other sources that are scarcer, such as the hydroelectric sector, for example. The most common biomass among these sources is sugarcane bagasse and straw, which are extracted for the production of ethanol and sugar in the country.
According to the Energy Research Company (EPE), the country produced around 177 million tons of sugarcane bagasse and 101 million tons of straw in 2015. According to researchers, the bioelectricity generated from sugarcane can be measured by its so-called “Calorific Value”, which is nothing more than the amount of energy released in the complete combustion of a fuel under different temperature and pressure conditions. According to Zilmar José de Souza, professor and bioelectricity manager at the Sugarcane Industry Union, the biomass sector already represents 10% of the power granted by the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) and the trend is only to grow due to the number of biomass plants that will come into operation in the country.
The sector's expectations include the participation of plants in auctions managed by the federal government. With each new auction, the sector has registered a greater number of projects, which makes it quite promising. According to Souza, Brazil has enough space for all renewable energy sources; the government just needs to be bold and create policies to encourage the sector. On June 15 and 16, Curitiba will host CIBIO – International Biomass Congress, an event focused exclusively on the biomass and energy generation sector, something unprecedented in Brazil. On the same days, the first trade fair in Brazil focused exclusively on the topic of biomass will be held; pellets, chips, sugarcane bagasse, biogas, and other technologies will be presented at the exhibition.
