Brazilian exports of gasoline and diesel grew strongly in the first four months of this year, while the country is experiencing its worst economic recession in decades, with the contribution of a political crisis, which has been reflected in a reduction in domestic fuel consumption since last year.

Diesel sales abroad totaled 245,5 thousand barrels in April, compared to no external sales in the same month last year, contributing to a 192,4% increase in the first four months of 2016, compared to the same period in 2015. The data was published this Thursday (12) by the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP).

Gasoline exports totaled 948,549 barrels in April, compared to 955 barrels shipped in the same month last year, allowing for a 996,5% jump in foreign sales in the first four months of the year, compared to a year earlier. Route reversal Brazil sent at least two cargoes of 37 tons of diesel to Europe in recent weeks, reversing the traditional route and highlighting a weakening of South America's largest economy.

In March, there was a 229% increase in diesel exports from Brazil compared to the same month in 2015, reflecting a large shipment sent by Petrobras to Argentina, according to a source from the company who told Reuters. Diesel imports in April totaled 3,72 million barrels, an increase of about 20% compared to the same period last year. However, in the year to date through April, there was a 26,8% drop in diesel imports by the country, compared to the same period last year.

Gasoline imports in April totaled 1,27 million barrels, a 45% drop compared to the same month in 2016. Between January and April, foreign purchases of gasoline totaled 4,97 million barrels, a 43,1% drop compared to the same months in 2015. Oil Brazil's oil exports in April totaled 24,7 million barrels, an increase of 1,6% compared to the same period in the previous year. Oil imports totaled 4,57 million barrels in April, a 22% drop compared to the same month in 2015.
